The 2015 Canada-Cuba Goodwill Tour organizers have selected Yarmouth baseball player Brad Jones to be part of their 2015 tour to Cuba to play baseball.
Seventeen (13U) and (15U) high performance players have been selected to participate in this event. These players were selected not only for their baseball abilities, but also for their love of the game and attitude of commitment and sportsmanship.
Players will play 10 games against Cuban teams over their seven-day stay. The players will also visit the schools and homes of the players from Cuba and get a chance to experience the Cuban Culture.
The goal of the Canada-Cuba Goodwill Tour is to give Canadians a life-learning experience that includes taking much-needed baseball equipment to countries that are gifted with talent but very deprived in the availability of equipment.
Players will be fundraising for both monetary donations for the cost of the trip as well as baseball equipment, clothing and school supplies to bring to Cuba as donations to the players there.
The Canada-Cuba Goodwill Tour starts on Jan. 31, 2015. Teams will be staying in Varadero, Cuba and playing the majority of their baseball in Matanzas, Cuba. More information about the tour is available online at www.caribbeanbaseballgoodwilltours.com.
Jones, meanwhile, has also been selected as a member of the Nova Scotia Selects 15U team, which will compete in the 15U national championships in Vaughn, Ontario this summer.
The team is made up of players from around Nova Scotia that have been selected through a series of training camps and tournaments. Players will train with the Nova Scotia Team as well as their teams in their area during the season. The team will also play against Midget AAA Teams from around the province and participate in high-performance tournaments prior to the national championship.
There were approximately 150 kids that tried out for the program and they narrowed it down to a core group of 37 that participated in camps, intersquad games and a tournament over a period of five weeks. This list was cut down again to the final roster of 18 players.
Jones is the only player from Yarmouth and the only player south of Kentville and Bridgewater to make the team. Jones will be playing 2nd base, catcher and will Pitch with the team.
Jones is also playing with the Bridgewater Bulldogs AAA team this year. He is the son of Doug and Shari Jones.
